If you use a non destructive system restore then no you won't. When you put your windows cd it will ask you what you want to do and warn you. you Can choose a non destructive system restore and that will not make you lose your files. If you do a higher lvl wich is a quick reformat then yes you will lose your files.

First of all, DO A BACKUP
That said, regardless of what the various techies (3 different) at the HP Support Centers assured me, I lost some irreplaceable data anyway.
Second of all, DO A BACKUP
It was supposed to be a NON-DESTRUCTIBLE System Recovery. So, you will probably lose some files.
Third of all , DO A BACKUP
Then do the System Recovery.

System Recovery?
It is safer, rather than take a chance, to back things up if you really need them.
There are cases, even in attempted "safe recovery" modes, or merely reinstalling windows on top of itself, that the partition, files, or errors were too much for windows to handle, and it craps out with you.
There are cases that you can't even log into windows till you do a complete format. If you wish to back up your system, try the NT backup tool (assuming your using XP), but 98/me should have a similar system tool. Back up to an external drive, then restore it back when you are finished using system recovery.
If you are using XP, why don't you try system restore first, before attempting to use recovery? Files in your My Documents folder should be untouched generally, and some folders may get renamed in the restore process, but files in My Documents are generally left alone by windows.
-) Better to be safe than sorry, backup first, then use recovery
-) Try system restore first, if available on your system
-) Try windows backup tool if possible
Hope any of these may help you

If you use system recovering it will reset your computer to the original manufacturer's settings so yes, you would lose your files. You could, however, try system restore to solve common problems but if you must use system recovery you can back up your files to DVDs, and external hard drive, or you can use some kind of online storage facility. Good luck.

Instead of worrying, save allllll the stuff you wouldn't want to lose to a CD and then use System Recovery (better safe than sorry)

If you're talking about System Restore, it will not remove your data. If you're talking about doing a System Recovery from a recovery partition or CD, it will. Best bet is to backup your data first regardless.

I have used that 2-3 times & have never lost anything, but do it when no programs are running. The program will show you a calendar with some days high lighted. Pick one of those that is for sure back before the problem occured. You will need to restart your computer so the restore will take effect.

You are not supposed to lose anything. It is always recommended to back them up just in case there are problems.
A system recovery only backs out system programs and any applications that request system recovery.

I had to use my system recovery disc and all my important documents were lost. Including 3,100 names in my family history program. Before you use it, be sure to back everything up on CDs or discs.
I had to re-create my entire family history. And it took me 3 months. It's now complete, but it was a total PITA.

No, just applications (.exe files) loaded after the recovery date.
Most other files remain unaffected.
Recovery reloads a saved snapshot of your registry from an earlier date. ANy registry entries after that date will be unavailable and hence... lost.
All you have to do is reload the apps.
