Well, becoming a yakuza is not an easy thing to do for a non-Japanese I would imagine.
For a Japanese though, I think it's not as hard as the Italian mob.
Every Yakuza group (Kumi) is a family.
The father figure is of course the head boss (AKA Oyabun)
But usually the oyabun is refered to as "oyaji" or "oyassan" by the lower yakuza members which literally means "father" in Japanese.
Just like the Italian mobsters, the Japanese yakuza also values connection. So usually a lower ranking member in a yakuza family will recruit prominant teenagers while they are young whom they personally know (ie : grew up in the same neighborhood, graduated or attended the same school etc).
Obviously by "prominant" I don't mean these kids get straight A's in school and study hard.
Usually they will recruit delinquent / violent teenagers who have solid street credentials and have some sort of connection with a yakuza family.
In the beginning they will be asked to hang around with the connected member or the recruiting member on their daily work and if they show promise they will hold a sake festival with a senior member initiating them in for full membership.
Here's an explanation on wiki about the yakuza.
Check out the ritual section where they talk about the sake-sharing ceremony.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakuza#Rituals
Everyone under the boss are considered as a brotherhood. Members who are higher ranked and considered a direct "child" of the head boss usually will refer to each other as "kyodai" which literally means "brother".
Also it has been known for people to walk into a Yakuza office (quite public) and ask to become a member. In which case they will be assigned to work under a certain senior member (Think "Project Leader").
So your best bet will be to walk into a yakuza office and ask for membership. Of course the chance of them stringing you up and beating you down will far exceed the chances of them welcoming you with open arms unless of course they respect your background and resume.
I think experience will speak volumns if you do not speak the language.
But as an overall idea, I'd say it's a bad one.
Train yourself to becoming a ninja if you really want to look cool.

There is no requirement to become a yakuza member. Foreigners are actually able to join the yakuza. With that said, once you become a member, you must cut your family ties and obey the Oyabun. Failure to obey is commonly resolved by simply eliminating the problem (which would be you).
You can recognize Yakuza members because they often wear sunglasses, suits, and have tattoos (if you can see them). Japanese citizens typically do not wear sunglasses, so it distinguishes them.
(the Yakuza don't call you... you have to go to them)

-get some nice yak's style tattoo. (cool ! )
-on your knee, ask any yak you might see in town to joy their group (don't forget to show them your tattoo). (people above me already tell how to find them.)
-if they don't accept you. impress them by cut one of your little finger off.
-if they still say no. impress them more by cut the other little finger off.
-if they still don't accept you. impress them even more by do the harakiri. (after all, no guarantee, if you survive they might accept you as one of them.)

Seeing how is it is a criminal organization, you probably have to kill someone. I would recommend a different career path....
