Perform in as many plays as you can and invite agents to see your play. Ask your actor friends for suggestions. If you don't have actor friends, start performing in plays so you can build your sources of "theatre information," by mingling with other actors.
Join an acting class! If you are not in NYC, you will probably only find "scam" agencies. If you live in Texas: go to SAG.org and look for agencies in your city. As Texas is a Right-to-Work State, you do NOT have to be a member of SAG or AFTRA unions.
Call the agent and schedule an appointment to meet and audition. You can join/SAG/AFTRA in Houston at a very reduced rate than in NYC. It depends on the city where you live. If you live in New York City, agents go to the theater to find new clients.

Same goes for the uk. 'Good' agents will pick you up from being in plays etc. To find out who they are check out Spotlight. However it's best to try for a medium agent first. PFD, ARG, ICM all of these are mostly closed shops.

For a start, where do you live? People will be able to point you in the right direction then. Putting your cv online with an agency like Monster can help too.

It may be easier to shove a camel thru the eye of a needle. Getting onto the acting or music scene is near impossible, I say you apply as a contestant to any and all talent searches and reality shows. DO WHAT IT TAKES TO JUST MAKE YOURSELF KNOW IN THAT VENUE> The right one will find you and if it be the LORD's WILL.....DONT ABUSE YOUR esteem.
