My dad was a WWII veteran. My mom used to tell me that she was glad they dropped the Bomb. My dad was set to be part of the invasion of Japan, and the casualties would have been massive. My father would probably have been killed and my brother and I would not have been born!
(Japan was truly defeated before that, but the leaders refused to surrender, wanting to fight to the last man.)
A friend of mine, a Filipino who remembered that time, told me the first reports described the bombs as giving off so much heat, they would "just evaporate water." Of course the A-bomb was top secret until it was used, and the public had no clue about what it was or how it worked or what the aftermath would be.
