Running will get you fit quicker, as well as help your heart. I'd advise a slow, steady jog for minimum 1/2 hour each time; at least 3 times weekly.

Hi there. Fast walking is best because it can be just as effective as running without the jarring of the joints which paves the way to osteo arthritis which is linked to the wear and tear of the joints. Exercise 5-6 days a week. 3 times a week really is for weight maintenance. 45-60 minutes a session and stretch after because that is when your muscles are warmed up or warm up for 10 minutes and then stretch. You might change your routine to exercise outside once in awhile and even change the activity like bicycling. This may keep you from getting bored and quitting. Waist size has been found to be more important than weight. A man's waist should not measure more than 34 inches. Belly fat diverts blood away from vital organs and can now predict future disease processes like heart attack, and diabetes.Measure at the level of the belly button. Weigh yourself no more than once a month. Improve your diet. keep your blood pressure in check. Good luck.Just because your neighbors appear fit doesn't mean they are. Jim Fix was one of the world's best runners, fit and thin and he dropped dead of a heart attack. Blood pressure and belly fat are strong indicators of disease. May you have a productive great year.

All activity burns calories. So walking on a treadmill will do that. Running on a treadmill increases the heart rate to a point where you are also improving your cardio-vascular system - that is, it benefits your heart and your blood supply.
Just remember that you will lose weight if you use more calories than you eat. Even breathing uses SOME calories - the trick is to balance the energy use against your intake.

Any exercise will help weight loss. I worked with a trainer and was told to at least walk 8 mph on a treadmill to get my heart rate up to a good exercise point. Another answerer said using weights works also, which is very true. Lifting free weights not only helps your arms, but also your mid-section. As time goes by and you feel comfortable with jogging or running, you may want to give it a try. Good luck! =)

Amazingly, running has not been shown to burn more calories than walking, covering the same distance. So if you run a mile, you will get there faster than walking, but won't burn any more calories than walking the same mile. That said, running 20 minutes versus walking 20 minutes would get you farther mileage wise, so running would burn more calories based on the time spent.

Yes you can, just burn more than you eat - but you know if you add a little weight training to it - youll burn fat faster.
