It depends on what you are looking to do. The zoo is great, all kinds of activities along with the animals to keep people occupied all day long, it can be a little pricy though.
The area itself is not terrible, although I would limit my walking to going to and from the car, it is one of the poorer areas of the city.
As far as how long to stay, there are lots of things to do and see in Philadelphia, so if you have not been there, stay a few days and check it out, you will not be let down.
Check out Penns Landing, that place is a great water scene, and there are usually lots of activities on the different piers.

If you are interested in doing the zoo and Sesame Place, you'll definitely want to stay over night. The zoo isn't in as nice a place as Sesame Place particularly since the zoo is in the city and SP is in the suburbs. The zoo isn't in that bad of an area, but traffic and parking around the zoo can be awful if you don't get there early enough.
Traffic around Sesame Place is normal. Like someone else said, there's a hotel right across the street and the mall is right there, too. There are a decent amount of hotels just minutes down the road, too, if the Sheraton is too pricy. It's a very safe neighborhood. It is expensive though and mostly a water park so I hope you're planning this trip for a warmer time of year. I believe they open around Mother's Day.
If you are a member of AAA, they sell discounted tickets to both attractions at the local offices here. You may want to check your local office or the website - www.aaa.com.
Regardless of what you decide, there's a lot to do in Philly. Depends on ages of any kids involved on what all I'd suggest, but definitely not something I'd do in one day. Feel free to send me a message if you want more info.

Sesame Place is in Bucks County which is very safe. It's just off Route 1, a few miles from the Turnpike exit, you would see a bit of traffic but nothing horrible.
The zoo is in Fairmount Park--if you are visiting there you probably would just drive to the zoo, then drive away when you're done, which would be quite safe, since the zoo is an enclosed space, you have to pay to get in, and the general public can't just waltz in and commit a crime. The roads around the zoo can be a little confusing. U sound very nervous about crime...the areas where visitors go like the Liberty Bell are fairly safe...when U hear about murders in Philly, remember it's a very large city in area, and most of the crimes are ghetto people killing their neighbors but they sort of live in a different world.

Nothing near Philly is in a good area but I take my family to the zoo often and have never seen anything that I would consider dangerous at the zoo, however the area surrounding the zoo is a drug area and you should stear clear of it.
Sesame Place is north of Philly and is safer but is also quiet expensive for a small park. Younger kids will love Sesame Place so for them it is probably worth it.
Out of the two options, the zoo is in a bad neighborhood but they have added stuff recently so there's lots to see, Sesame Place is safer and probably cleaner too but it costs more.

in case you understand the position Turtle Park is then you quite will discover this position. there's a Irish Pub/Bar throughout the line. can not imagine of their call in the present day. Order the Fried fowl. Their renowned for it. Get written up in food articles and magazines each and each and every of the time. you are able to really see this position from the vehicle parking zone on the Zoo. I walk from the Zoo vehicle parking zone each and each and every 3 hundred and sixty 5 days to the Dogtown St. Patties day parade.

Well that is great I'm from Philly and both ideas are great for the kids you might even want to take them to the Please Touch Museum, or The Franklin Institute. Our Zoo is one of the best and huge. You will enjoy. Don;t forget to get a Cheese Steak, And Soft Pretzels to make the Philly experience.

Sesame Place is in Bucks County and used to be a very safe place when I lived there. Still pretty nice, except for the drug addicts, XXX dance clubs down the road, crime and poor housing nearby.
