OK, so many people have been telling me that the second amendment was made so that we could overthrow a bad government, not so that I can keep a pistol by my side in a bad neighborhood.

So, I have heard that it should not be a right to own guns, but to be able to get them in case a state militia needs to be formed.

Could someone explain this. If we don't have the right to won guns, then obviously no one would be making them, right? So how would we get them if we needed to organize a militia?

Well spoken. These anti-gun nuts who demand that the 2nd Amendment has nothing to do with individuals owning guns almost drive me to keep mine strapped to my hip at all times. The 2nd Amendment reads: A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

1. The word people is capitalized to emphasize that it is individuals just like it was in the Declaration of Independence.

2. Anyone who understands basic English understands comma placement. The first phrase "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State" is a dependent clause, thus making the second phrase the actual heart of the statements AND an independent clause. Thus "the right of the People to keep and bear arms" is more important to the Amendment than the first clause.

The right of the people to keep and bear arms is basic and fundamental to the security of a free state. On the other hand, in a civilized society such as ours, we should not take the Law into our own hands like wearing a 'pistol by [your] side in a bad neighborhood.' If it's bad, don't go there. Now in the Mall in Salt Lake, if there had just been someone exercising their right to keep and bear arms in the right place at the right time, perhaps a couple more of those people might not be dead....

You can have all the guns you want to buy, If you do not have a Felony or a Mental problem, the issue is fully automatic and you can even purchase a permit to own these. I am tired of hearing this as a political issue. Nobody wants to take anybody's gun away.besides guns don't kill people, people kill people. If someone wants to kill they have a variety of weapons they can use. More people die in this country every year from automobile accidents than guns. Not to mention alcohol, cigarettes and drugs. The politicians keep sucking in you fools to vote for them over things that are rights we already have. In example abortion, religion including the right to have guns

Interpretations of the second amendment are largely based on the political leanings of the supreme court. I've read enough of the writings of our founding fathers to fully understand that they meant for the civilian population to have guns. And carry them.

"The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.-Thomas Jefferson"

"The Constitution preserves "the advantage of being armed which Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation...(where) the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms." (James Madison of Virginia, The Federalist, No. 46)

"Arms in the hands of individual citizens may be used at individual discretion in private self-defense." (John Adams, A Defence of the Constitutions of Government of the United States of America [1787-1788])

"The Constitution shall never be construed...to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms." (Samuel Adams, Debates and Proceedings in the Convention of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 86-87)

I may be a hippy California native (transplanted to Houston), but damn do I like guns. I'm no fan of Bush, but don't you ever think about stepping foot on my property without me blowing you away with any number of assorted firearms (M4, AK47, Ithaca 12 gauge, Remington 710, Moisin-Nagant, MPA 9mm, HK USP, 1911, Springfield XD, etc.). I'm no Republican or Democrat. I served as an Infantryman for 4 years. People shouldn't go around classifying themselves into groups. Only group I belong to is the "Goddamn do I love guns" group.

The 2nd Amendment exists so that you can protect yourself from zombies. Woe to anyone who doesn't have an arsenal when the zombie invasion occurs.

Could you give me an example in the last 300 years where guns in the hands of the general population have halted a government takeover.

Unless you are talking about banana republics. Where weapons are so prevalent you can't tell the difference between, gangs, warlords, the police, and the army. Go move to Somalia or Iraq then if this is your American vision..

Thanks but no thanks.

I think a degree of weapons control has proven to be best in any civilized country.

I suggest you join civilization.

Where did you get the idea we can't own guns? Of course we can own guns; however, if anyone has been convicted of a felony, they cannot...and rightfully should not.

GWB singed into law that a person cannot be prosecuted when defending home and family. In other words, if an assailant enters a home and the family is threatened with bodily harm, they are allowed to 'shoot' and NOT suffer prosecution in a court of law...say from the assailant's family who wants to sue for bodily injury to him/her.

You can always buy a guy somwhere. There are a lot of gun salesmen in the US. Look into a shooting club. They always have guns and ammo. So do the Hell's Angels but stay away from them unless you want to kiss the baby.

People who say things like that are the same people who think communism is a good idea.

Guns are not just about protecting the citizenry from an overzealous government, they are also about protecting individuals from OTHER individuals.
