A great deal of this depends on if your husband is an experienced bowler. If he is, than getting him a ball isn't something you should do, although a wonderful gesture, good bowlers would have something specific in mind when getting a new ball.

If he is not an experienced bowler then a bowling ally pro shop is a good place to start. You can get personalized bowling balls with a variety of cartoon characters, cute faces, or whatever fun stuff on them. It can get kinda fairly personalized and be pretty fun.

As far as getting finger holes drilled you should probably wait until after you give it to him later on. The pro shop will fit the finger holes specifically to his fingers and thumb. In most cases the pro shop will drill the finger holes for free if you've bought the ball in that shop

Purchase it online from an internet retailer (bowlingballsales.com and bowling.com) with free shipping and then have it drilled to match his finger and thumb dimensions. The online pro shops will have descriptions of bowling equipment and what each performance quality the bowling balls have, so that your husband will not have to guess as to which one will suit his game.

The bowling balls with holes drilled into them are basic plastic or polyester balls for beginners and children. These are readily available at Sports Authority, KMart and WalMart stores.

go to a bowling ally (in a large city) and they most likely sell a wider variety of balls.
