Not all south side is a slum. The midway airport area is a rumbling area, that you might be able to find an apartment for under 1000. You could also try the south suburbs such as chicago ridge.

Miway area is good but south of Cicero. I love my neighborhood "Bridgeport." My son goes to a great school here. The school is number 1 in Chicago. The rent is expensive but you can definitely find a place for under $1000.

Zandelia doesn't know what she's talking about.
I would first look for a good school for your kids and then see what apartments are available in that immediate area. For example, Ray Elementary School in Hyde Park has a great reputation, but there may be others that are just as good or better.

It depends you can find something reasonable for 1,000. Like the persona above me said, Hyde Park is nice, you can also try around Midway airport. If your going to go south, I would do anything south of Pulaski.

The South side of Chicago is no place for children. You probably can only rent a slum there anyway.
