Children will always tell the truth unless they are afraid to. The long range effect on a child varies. Depending on what they saw or heard. Don't force a child to testify if it is too painful. You may need to take the child for counciling. Also reinforce the fact that they have not done anything wrong and that it wasn't their fault.

The child may be from an abusive family, a stable family if you are talking about your own self that you witnessed something and you are having symptoms but want to stay anonymous then only you know and if you want some positive feedback on this you will have to be more specific.

it is also true that a child can only relate in a language it will not have expertise on. and it also must relate according to what is experienced or is emotionally felt and provided by the young mind of the child.
