I know....shy people simply feel a bit uncomfortable in situations they arent familar with but they are still able to function fairly normally when it comes down to it - social anxiety actually inhibits your life.

Social anxiety and shyness couldn't be farther from each other if they tried to be. My mother in law has social anxiety. She takes Paxil on a regular basis. In extremly tense situations, she freaks out unlike others who would just handle the situation as it comes at them. Shyness is being distant from everyone and not saying much to anybody. My mother in law is a very outgoing person and has lots of friends. Shy people usually don't.

Absolutely NOT!! And I don't follow URLs in these questions. If you are angry because you are shy, then rightly so!! A person with social anxiety can have the loudest mouth in the room!! But they are dying inside because of their fears!! You are 100% Correct but you don't need to prove it to anyone. There's the problem. Your need to prove it. Is someone criticizing you or making excuses for themselves?? Then they might need to read those definitions. But don't be Shakespeare's "The Lady Doth Protest Too Much!!"@8-) Peace.

All of these new "diseases" are an attempt to pathologize perfectly normal behavior by perfectly normal people. They just are not at the exact apex of the bell curve. It is an attempt to squeeze these people out of society, and make everyone behave exactly the same.
