I am going to travel to the Philippines on a missions trip and I was wondering if any one knew the status of Christianity on the island of Mindanao specifically the city of Surigao. If they get persecuted or not? What is the spiritual climate of the area is like on the island? Any other information to knew regarding this question would be of great help. Thank you!

I do not know that city or province, but I hear both sides of the coin. I have known people went all over Mindanao with no problems and others that were fearful. Most of the Muslim population is in the southern areas around Zamboagna, Gen Santos as well to the north in Iligan. I have friends in Plaridel, Ozimas and CDO and they speak as all is well there and no Muslim problems. Mindanao is a huge island. Most of the Philippines as you know is Catholic, Islam has been in Mindanao a long time. In the mountain central provinces are guerrilla Muslim terrorist training camps.USA forces are well involved and hidden there and America aides the removal of same. I suggest once you get there befriend a Filipino family you feel you can trust and use one as a guide in many ways for your safety. you may run across members of the Philippines Church of Christ, out of Manila, they are in the USA as well. They are called the "Christo". Their church is large and all know the main church in Manila. They would be I would think a strong opposition to you, however your church affiliation you did not mention. If you do not know of them, I suggest you read their website. They have members in Mindanao as well.
There is a church in Roanoke Va., Parkway House of Prayer, on King street. Look up their website and call their number. They have built 5 churches in the Philippines and I am sure can give you some info. GB

What I can tell you is that the island of Mindanao is a very nice place. A lot of people have a wrong notion when they hear about this place. Majority of the population in this area are Christians.

Surigao is such a beautiful city. And so are lots of other places in the Philippines. Aside from that, Filipinos are known for being friendly and hospitable.

I have visited Mindanao I believe that of the Philippine islands it has a large Muslim population, but as far as persecution of Christians is concerned I don't think there is any problem due to the fact that the majority of Mindanao people are Catholic. During my three weeks in Mindanao I met Muslims and catholics leaving peacefully together. Although there is still occasional unrest I would not be to worried. The area to avoid is Basilan and the Sulu archipelago although I have not heard of any recent trouble kidnapping can be a problem. Where ever you travel in the world the way in which you conduct yourself is very important if you use good manners you will find Philippino people to be the friendliest of people. I hope you find yourself as well welcomed by the locals as I did.

Actually, there are more christians in Mindanao than there are muslims. It's quite a common misconception that Mindanao is dominated by muslims. Muslims only make up a small part of Mindanao. Most of them are in the southwestern region.

Although the the largest Muslim population of the Philippines is concentrated in Mindanao, majority of the people of Mindanao are still Christians (esp. Catholics).

What kind of mission are you on? If you are there to feed the hungry and heal the sick, you will be very much welcomed. But don't try anything foolish like start preaching about Christ in a muslim territory... that's just nonsense. There were Catholic priests who were kidnapped and held captive in Mindanao, so don't mess around in that part of the island.
