it has also given a defragmentation status of my hard disk?
My worry is that this program ran on its own whether it's something that can damage my laptop;s operation service (I use windows XP service pack 2)

svchost.exe is a windows networking component. Don't delete it. Scan your PC with an anti virus and spyware tools.

It could be a virus but don't be too sure as it could also be any number of other things. One thing to note, however, windows xp cannot schedule an automatic defrag so some other program could be doing it for you like some sort of pc health monitor program.

Try running anti-virus instead of asking. If it is a virus, the anti will know if it is up-to-date as an out of date antivirus is liek having none at all!

No virus is going to do a defrag of your hard drive. If I got that deep into your OS, I wouldn't write code to defrag. I'd write code to reformat. "fdisk C:\" is pretty easy to write...

Svchost.exe is a core windows program that services (hosts) other applications. What you're seeing is typical of a logon script or scheduled task running. Check your scheduled tasks to see if you've got something scheduled, then check msconfig for startup tasks. Do a search for a login.bat file as well. You'll find the culprit if you try. Probably something pretty innocuous.

sounds like a virus .. if u have a virus scan try to use it in a safe mode , to do that start , then run then type msconfig then choose General box then check on diagnostic then restary the compter and try the antivirus

It's definatly a virus! It'll ruin your computer! Isolate the file and destroy it.....
