It's up to you if you want the whole manuscripted returned or just the first page. If you send SASE in letter form, the publisher will sent you a rejection letter plus the first page of your manuscript. If you send a large folder, the publisher will send you back your entire manuscript. Just remember if you send a large folder, put the correct amount ofstamps so your work is returned. For a letter SASE, one stamp will do. Also if you get accepted, they will call you or send you a letter with their own stamp.

I suppose it matters what kind of work you're submitting and to whom. My assumption would be that this is writing/work for publication. One thing I've definitely learned the hard way is that you should follow the recipient's submission guidleines exactly. And, any manuscript (ms) you send should be sent flat, not folded. If your return envelope is also flat, you may have a ms that's clean enough to be re-sent with only a new title page/ cover letter! More and more places do not want SASE, or even SAS postcards to acknowledge receipt! If they do want a SASE, proper and exact return postage is a must. Just slapping a bunch of stamps on marks the amateur -- and too many stamps coming or going marks mail as suspicious, so the PO holds it, and x-rays it, and often returns to sender, so you miss critical deadlines... and did I mention I learned things like this the hard way?? Whatever your work, I hope you get the desired results!

SASE--Self-addressed stamped envelope

It should be big enough to return your manuscript. Color doesn't matter, though I would suggest against anything in weird colors if for no other reason than it will attract all the wrong sort of attention. It should have enough postage on it to insure that the manuscript is returned to you. Use your own address in both the Addressee space and the return address area to insure you get your document back.
