The main disadvantages of tourism are that locals may not benefit from it and may actually be priced out of the housing market and that for beach tourism especially there tends to be a rise in crime and prostitution.
1. Things to do--insist that hotels buy food and supplies locally, and invest in the local capacity to supply these. In a recent article in Costa Rica's La Nacion, it stated that only 8 cents of every dollar spent in Cancun stays in Mexico.
2. Create a union of guides so that only people who have lived in an area for at least 3 years can be local guides--tours tend to cut corners by having the trip coordinator act as guide. Reserve a portion of the available land before development for housing for local residents. Invest in police services BEFORE development.
3. Create attractions that are based on local culture and resources instead of on sand, sea and sex.

These are a few ideas. The other person was right. Most nations promote tourism. Most nation's benefit from tourism, but often the sites where tourists go do not reap many benefits. This can be avoided.

The main disadvantage is the alteration of the natural and cultural landscape because of building bad hotels etc, which in fact destroys the reason for tourism and therefore tourism is not sustainable. The only way to prevent this is by promoting better quality and design in the products sold, in the shop windows, better architecture at the hotels built, better infrastructure in order not to pollute, and of course the re- use and conservation of historic buildings. You see new "traditional" hotels built in Pelion or Zagorochoria, while many of the wondeful old mansions fall into ruins.

Specifically on Greece.
I have travelled much of Greece in the past18 years and I have seen beautiful places absolutely and totally decimated by the locals in order to make money off of tourists. Agia Marina in Egina, Nidri in Lefkada, Ios... ad infinitum. The onslaught of tourists in August makes no place enjoyable. Even traditional Ydra has TOO many tourists visiting. There is a point of saturation and Greece is well beyond it. Tourism has also changed the fiber of Greek culture and FILOXENIA is not what it used to be. Today it is bought and sold a million times in a day. Sad, very sad.
How do you stop it? How do you stop greed and avarice?
