I know all about his playoff record, and he does seem cursed in the off season, but isn't Marty EXACTLY the type of coach Pitt thrives with? Cowher was a Marty Disciple.
None of the organizations Marty was fired from did anything after he left either......they were all better with him there,
In other words, some of this has to do with the ownership, and organizations, he worked with as well as his coaching.
That being said, there was no excuse for losing that New England game. He was outcaoched. (then again, if everyone who was outcoached by Belicheck was fired, there'd be no coaches)

Murdock....that was funny. LMAO
I take it you, like most, are not a marty fan. I know I'm in a minority, but I also just think he'd be an exact fit for Pitt.

Somhaus.....great post....but Marty was still pretty damn good last season.
I know the Rooneys don't operate like that....it's part of why they win.....it's a hypothetical....
I just can't see a better fit for the Steelers, especially after Cowher, then the man who tutored Cowher.

This question is not asked as an insult to Tomlin. I have NO idea what Tomlin is capable of, and I am not saying replace him because of his talent.
This question is merely aimed at pointing out what a great fit it would be between Marty and the Steel.
Given Pitt's organization.....Tomlin probably will do well.
BTW....I'm an Eagles fan....so my knowledge of Tomlin is limited. (I was screaming for philly to hire Marty when they hired Reid.....so what do I know?)

NO!!!!!! The Steelers have always been successful in bringing in new/young talent to the HC position. The way the game is constantly evolving makes it a young man's game.
I would take a newcomer who impressed me over a Gibbs, Schott, Parcells, or whatever washed up fogie you can name any day of the week.
Sure those three were great (Gibbs, Parcells) and good (Schott), but that was TEN YEARS AGO!!!
Welcome to the Mike Tomlin years....thank god.
Murdock=You are an idiot. Every post you put up here is sooo stupid. Occasionly, its funny. But all the time? To quote a great movie, you are f***ing clown shoes.

Marty only had one year left on his contract and he made it clear he did not want to renew it. At the end of 2006, Marty's offensive and defensive coordinator left for head coaching jobs and several other assistant coaches were offered higher ranking jobs for other teams as well. The Chargers had a lot of holes to fill in their coaching staff. When a head coach gets hired by any team, he is allowed to bring in his own assistants. Since Marty was only going to be there for one season, the Chargers realized it would be next to impossible to bring in quality coaches for what would likely be only one year. Thus the prudent thing to do was to start fresh with a new head coach and new assistants. Was Norv Turner the right choice? That's debatable. His regular seasons have been rollercoasters but he has made the playoffs each year and actually won playoff games both years, something Marty was not able to do.

No, you do not fire Tomlin at the end of the year to hire Marty. You will see that Tomlin will do good. Marty is getting too old for football and if the Steelers hire him, they will only have him for a couple seasons unlike Tomlin where they could have him for as long as they had Chuck and Bill.
Go Steelers!!

Tomlin ISN'T getting fired after one season. The Steelers could go 0-16 this year, yeah not going to happen but still, and Tomlin wouldn't be fired. That isn't how the Rooneys work. As to all the people Belichick "outcoached" look at his time in Cleveland. Cowher was winning division titles, and Belichick won ZERO during that time. It isn't the Coach.

Unlike other teams the Rooneys don't fire over a few bad seasons, they are patient. I am worried about Tomlin as well ,but we will see that the Rooneys don't bow to pressure or others ideas.

Rooney wouldn't do it. He isn't as impatient as some owners (Al Davis, Jerry Jones). He'll keep Tomlin around for a few years, no matter what anyone else thinks.

Marty's playoff record is horrible at 5-14. Why would Pittsburgh want him?

why does nobody have any faith in the Rooney's choice...two coaches totaling 5 super bowls in the last 30 whatever years thats pretty solid in my eyes...give the guy a chance holy hell...the NFL is all about super bowls and success in the playoffs so Marty would be the last guy i want to see in Pittsburgh because its proven his teams blow in the playoffs...Did the teams he was fired from win a super bowl with him there? nope...I would take an unproven coach rather than one that has proven he cant win in the playoffs.

I would fire Mike Tomlin after this season- Then I would hire Marty as the Head Coach with the following assistants:
Offensive Coordinator- Michael Irvin
Defensive Coordinator- Pete Carroll
QB Coach- Ryan Leaf
Def. Secondary Coach- Mike Martz
