MOST DEFINATELY - that's exactly what I am doing, and it's going incredibly well....
I’ve found a fantastic company called Sitesell. This is the very first time I have ever built a website, so I needed a company who could take me by the hand, step by step!
I have nothing but praise for them! They make EVERYTHING so easy! They supply all of the online training, simple (yet incredibly sophisticated tools) and excellent support.
The cost is just $299 (£170) per year. That includes all of the above plus domain registration. They even supply the templates for designing your site! And don't worry about html coding or other techy stuff as that's all taken care of for you!
My site is only 9 months old. It is already very highly ranked by the major search engines and is attracting up to 1000 visitors a day! Plus it generates an income which not only covers the costs, but actually shows a healthy profit!

YES! Yahoo (Beta) and Google will pay you to put advertisements on your website. Basically, websites pay google/yahoo to find sites that will advertise for them. You don't pay a thing for these services. There are other advertising programs like this, too. Do your homework, though. Some pay-per-click, and some will pay-per-view. Also, they have various rules for using their services, so make sure you read them thoroughly - if you break the rules, you're never allowed to come back to them!
Here is a site for common website ad terminology:

This site will help you figure your revenue with Google Adsense, should you choose to use it.

You sure can! You just need to have content compelling enough bring in lots of viewers. Companies will than pay you big bucks to advertise on your site. Yahoo, Google, etc...are perfect examples. I visit Google ten times a day and don't pay a dime and they are rolling in cash because of advertising.
Think about television and advertising there. Its the same concept.

Advertising, I believe, is the only way to accomplish this. Advertisers will want to put banner ads on your page and will pay you when someone is directed from your webpage to theirs. The money is miniscule, like a penny or so.
Just consider people do not like banner ads but its what drives the advertising economy on the internet.
