Yes you can use an OHM meter for the continuity test. There should be two wires from the pulse coil, connect your meter accross the two wires, there should be continuity at some low Ohm value. A better test is for actual output, this is done with a peak voltage meter, again accross the two wires, try to start engine, should get a reading of 1.7 volts minimum if its any good.
I don't know if you will be able to do this check with your meter set on AC scale or not. Some brands of meters (IE FLUKE) has peak voltage accessory attachments available.
