Lizzie and Emma Borden had an illegitimate half-brother whom their father Andrew Borden had fathered with a local "floozy" before he'd married their mother. One author I read suggested that this half-brother was hitting up the old man for money, and that he was know to carry a hatchet around with him. The fact that Lizzie was acquitted and that they were unable to prove anything according to the facts of the case is a strong indication that someone else killed the Borden couple. Sorry, I don't remember the name of this book or author as I read it over 5 years ago. Go to your local library and browse the infamous murders section and you may find it.

She had opportunity, motive, and during an investigation in this time period a family member is the first person that will be suspect. Killing someone with a hatchet is a personel way of killing which means that the killer knew the victims. What they could not figure out was why she did not have blood all over her...they figured she commited the crime naked and bathed afterwards. Try this link.

Lizzie Borden was likely acquitted because the jury couldn't believe that a "lady" could commit such a heinous crime. It's just as likely that she was guilty.
