An apostate is one who has lost faith in their god/religion for whatever reason. They may either no longer believe there is a god, or believe that their god has abandoned them.
An atheist either holds no belief in gods, or actively believes that gods do not exist. Some atheists like myself are atheist from the beginning, while others may have believed at one time but then went through apostasy.
A deist, to round things out, is one who believes in a god, but also believes that after creation, that god took a strictly hands-off ("laissez-faire") position, and that although there is a god, that god does not answer prayers or otherwise intervene in the running of the world or our lives. (Incidentally, many of America's founding fathers were deists.)

It certainly appears that the thinking of abandonment by God is actually a belief in God, therefor you do actually believe in the existence of God. There is no relationship in not believing for one has to believe to ask the question about abandoning.

Both still believe God exists. An atheist, for example, just plain doesn't believe in the existence of a god/ess, benevolent or not (one that has abandoned us).
