I have tried using just water, and I heard that you should not use soap. I obviously do not want to use chemicals as the bit goes into the horse's mouth. If anyone can help me out at all, that would be great!! Thanks

Toothpaste!!! Obviously it is safe to go in their mouth, and also adds a nice minty taste that the horse will enjoy. In addition to this there is an ingredient in toothpaste that removes rust. I can't recall what the ingredient is, but it works really well. You can also use toothpaste on your tub or counter tops if you left something like a shaving cream can out and it created a rust ring on the surface. But to use the toothpast you simply scrub it on the bit (I actually prefer to use a toothbrush, since it gets in the nooks and crannies) let the bit sit for about 15 minutes to break everything up, and then simply scrub it off with the toothbrush, rag and water. This is a completely safe and very effective rust removal! Best of luck!

I am reading many wrong answers. Only bits made from sweet or black iron should rust and then only a little bit. It makes them taste sweeter to the horse. Chrome plated bits rust very quickly and once rusted should not be used. The bit should always be smooth and not at all near being rusted through. The sweet iron just turns colors and never becomes rough. Of course if you want to rip up your horses mouth and make him uncomfortable and have him resent being ridden then go for it.

It depends on where the rust is. If it is on the sides (cheek pieces) of the bit, you may try a silver polish to help shine it up. If it is on the mouthpiece, leave it alone. A lot of mouthpieces are designed to rust. This keeps your horses mouth moist and the rust will not harm them, unless it is to the point of rusting thru, then you need to toss it and get a new bit.

Poor enough Coca Cola in a bucket so to cover the bit. Let it soak. I have never tried it, but have heard Coca Cola is a good rust removed and it should not hurt your horse.

You can not use water if there is leather attached. If it is all metal you can use a number of acidic products such as vinegar, orange derived cleaners, naval jelly, a can of coca cola or watered down solution of muriatic acid. Naval jelly, the orange cleaner and muriatic acid are available from the hardware store. Let the bit soak for awhile, brush with a tooth brush. When you clean it to where you like it, Scrub it down with a solution of baking soda and water. This will neutralize any of the acidic residue. If you are worried just place it on your tongue.

If it does have leather I would just use a tooth brush with tooth paste and brush well. Use saddle soap on the leather.

Just scrub it off by hand. If it isn't made out of stainless steel, silver or copper, it's going to be rusty no matter what.

If it's really bad, it's time for a new bit anyways.
