Dowry is as old as Indian society. The institution of dowry was created for a different purpose. It was to insure that the girl was protected by her in-laws, and would have been a secure institution if people did not misuse it as they do today. Politicians misuse this institution to attract votes, so called voluntary organizations misuse it to gain recognition. Should there be any misadjustment between the spouses, this institution of dowry should not have been brought out into the forefront. It is now just a coercive means for the parents of the wife to bring the man down to his knees before them without understanding small adjustment problems between the couple which exists in every home.
As far as Sati, was an institution created in Rajasthan which was governed by different warring tribes. After a battle, for fear the victors women would ravish the women, the women committed Sati. Of course now Sati is almost obliterated.
Dowry and Sati are what Indian society has created itself considering the need of the times.

Harassment of women takes place all over the world in cities and in villages. Usually it is because the people who do the harassment are very ignorant or have no sense of justice.

However,harassment also exists among the rich who should no better. Really it is being a bully. There are bullies everywhere but people should shut them down early before they cause too much damage.
