I doubt that it has anything to do with the hot water heater. I bet that the pipe carrying away the waste water for the shower and washer isn't big enough for both at the same time, and when you put on the washer the water flows out the top of the drain pipe for the washer. Since you can make it happen then I would try turning on the shower and washer at the same time, and carefuly watching what happens. Watch the pipe that the washer drains into closely, also make sure that the water isn't leaking from the washer, there are lots of places that can leak on a washer

Make sure the washer isn't leaking....the seal on shower floor could be leaking as well... The new water heater is probably not the problem. If a pipe was leaking under pressure you would have a flood not a leak...does the water show up at any particular time? IE . when your using the shower or washer is working...

It sounds liek a weird problem, particularly with this special combination of events. You obviously need to look for the leak when you have these events occuring, not afterward.
The best I can suggest is the shower's valve. I had a single handle valve that had the seal go out and it leaked water out of the valve and leaked onto the ceiling below. Replacing the cartridge fixed the leaking.

Its sounds like the mixing valve or even the supply lines have came loose or sprang a leak.. Your only option is to cut open a square hole in the wall to look at it. Its not a big deal to do the patchwork but takes some time and effort. If you do not take care of this it will eventually if not already cause mold and other growth.

check the relief valve on top of(or side of) the hot water tank. Is there any water coming out of the pipe that is attached to the valve? If so, the heat settings for the tank are too high, or the relief valve is faulty.
