You better research the doctor who does the surgury. Failure rate and law suits. Research the data on this. There are terror stories and as with all surgury a risk of error or infection. Weigh the odds against the need. I opted out but have friends that did not. Almost all surguries are not permanent and require further work later down the road that builds up scar tissue. Do one eye at a time so if anything does go wrong you still have one left.
Think about it...
Good luck

My mom had this surgery done on one of her eyes. The doctor gave her monovision, so one eye would be used to see close up, the other for distance. I was born that way naturally.

To answer your question though, there are always risks that go along with any surgery. I doubt that you'd go blind. My mom had it done, and she came out of the surgery just fine and no longer needs glasses. There could be a few side effects, but nothing too major. I know that a person can become a little more light sensitve, and at night when driving, you may see halos and starbursts around bright lights, but this is something that usually goes away with time. I also have a site listed below for you to read up on the risks a little bit. Again...there are always risks with any kind of surgery, it doesn't mean that it will happen. They just have to let you be aware that things can go wrong. If every doctor guaranteed you 100% that nothing would go wrong, and something did...I don't think we'd have many doctors left after all the law suits.

Just be sure to find a trusted doctor who has had many years of experience with LASIK surgery. The chances for complications are rare.

I don't think it's possible that you'd go blind. The one thing to do correctly is good hygiene to prevent infection following treatment. My wife had laser eye surgery to correct her distance vision, one week ago today. She is thrilled by the results and now has twenty twenty vision. No pain at all during surgery. Drops in her eyes four times daily for a week. Little discomfort about four hours after op' but fine since then. She has worn thick glasses and contact lenses for about thirty years and is so pleased to be able to throw her glasses away. Money well spent! We live in the North East of England and wish you all the very best should you decide to go ahead.

Allways advisable to try contact lenses 1st coz its not permanant.

At age 40 to 45 everyone with perfect distance vision will need reading glasses so think about your age and that your vision wont be perfect forever.

The time it takes for vision to stabalise depends the techinique used, LASIK usually takes a few days with emediate good vision, LASEK can take weeks along with PRK, The latter ones tend to have more long term benefits,

It is almost impossible to see if one has had lazer treatment just by observation assuming theres no complications.

Comlications include:
Corneal oedema and distention which is basicaly the swelling of the front part of the eye.
Lazer burns to other parts of the eye causing other problems
Infection

Note that these complications are very very rare.

I don't know all of them, but there was one chap very nearly killed on Everest (only rescued by extreme good luck, lost rather a lot of useful bits of himself to frostbite) because he'd had laser eye treatment and one previously unknown consequence was going blind at altitude. They may have fixed this by now, but it's a question I'd want answering first.
