10 karat gold is 10 parts of pure gold to 14 parts of other metal, usually mostly copper.
14 karat gold is 14 parts of pure gold to 10 parts of other metal, usually some copper and more silver.
The physical difference is that the 14 karat gold will be a little denser, a little softer, and may be a slightly lighter colour. This is because silver and copper are both much harder than pure gold, but quite a bit less dense.

Karat is a fashion used to value the pruity of gold. 24 Karat is good, 24-karat gold. subsequently, something below organic is alloyed with something else - 12 karat is barely 50% gold, the different 50% being another metallic. 10 karat is 10/24 gold or in basic terms 40-one.666% gold.

The difference between 10 karat and 14 karat gold is the hardness/pureness of the metal. That is what a karat measures. The true difference is that 10 karat gold has more base metal nickle in it than 14 karat gold, therefore it is less pure and harder.

Basically, the difference between 10-carrat, 14-carrat, 18-carrat,
etc, is simply the degree of purity. 10-carrat gold has several impurities in it, so the luster (shine) isn't as bright. As the num-
bers get higher (ie, 14, 18, 21, etc.), the fewer impurities the gold
contains and the luster is brighter. One thing to remember,
though, is that the more gold is purified, the softer it becomes. So, many goldsmiths will add nickel to strengthen it and help to
preserve its shine.

The other difference is the more carats, the shinier they are the more fragile they are. For example 10K is stronger than 14 K, they will bend easier than the 10K, so 24K is much more fragile than the 10K.
