It was more an invasion then colonization, the Irish were already there. England under Henry the 8th became Protestant or more precisely anti-Catholic. Ireland remained Catholic. Elizabeth the 1st invaded Ireland because it was felt that Ireland (being Catholic) was a threat. Both France and Spain were Catholic too. Either country could launch an invasion of England by landing an army in Ireland. This possibility was unacceptable to Elizabeth. So she sent troops into Ireland to dissuade the French and Spanish from getting any ideas. It worked, in 1588 Spain sent an Armada to England to make England Catholic again. As you know it was a failure. If Ireland had allowed Spain to land an invasion force. Spain may have succeeded. Spain already had an army in the Netherlands, intending to cross the channel after the Armada had destroyed the English sea power. But the English destroyed the Spanish Armada 1st. In the late 1500s England began serious settlement in Ireland causing several battles between the Irish and England. England eventually prevailed. Spain did finally land an Army in Ireland (early 1600s) just as Elizabeth predicted. But by this time the English were in control in Ireland (I think) and kicked their butt with Irish help.
