My computer's speakers (Cambridge SoundWorks 2500 - yes, I bought them in Japan) were working perfectly until I tried to update my sound card driver (Realtek HD Audio) and now they have stopped working.
It's a 5.1 system and to hear anything at all through the speakers now I have to turn the volume up to full and the sound (very quietly) comes out of the top-right speaker on my desk, and only that speaker.
I _think_ my volumes are all configured correctly but I may be wrong. Anyone got any ideas?

Re-install the older driver for your Realtek HD Audio chip.

Integrated Audio chips are garbage in my book.

My advise:

Do a system restore PRIOR to the date that you download the new sound drivers. This will remove the download and hopefully restore your sound. i really hope this works as I use surrounds sound and I know just how amazing the experience is.

Note:
KEY POINT
And changes, documents etc.. thats you have made before the date that you return your system to will be removed, hence you may want to make a backup of any recent important documents.

To do a system restore:
↓ Start menu
↓ Accessories
↓ System Tools
↓ System Restore

Remember to return to the day BEFORE you download the drivers.
