I am not a journalist...yet. I am now in college working towards that goal, but I can tell you how I started. My biggest passion is to write. Mom was terrified I would become a novelist, since it's such an uncertain career, for most. So I decided on Journalism. I took a Journalism class in High school, which is mainly theory, history, and a lot of writing. After a whole year of that I became part of the School's newspaper staff. I think it's different on some schools but even if you are not a part of the school's newspaper staff you can turn in your own articles. Whether they publish it or not is completely up to the Chief Editor. Being part of the newspaper staff would pretty much help you understand the process of making a newspaper and meeting strict deadlines, or at least it's a start.

As for schools, I heard Northwestern has a reputation for having one of the best Journalism Programs in the country. It seems like most journalism hopefuls would aim to go there, but I might be wrong. It wouldn't hurt to look up its website and see for yourself.

My favorite choice on what to do, when in doubt: ask the Journalism teacher. They should know their stuff. If not face to face, e-mail.

Hope I could help you with what I know.

You go to journalism school and get a job.

Check the website for the state colleges near you. Journalism is a popular job - there should be something nearby. Also, check the US News and World Report website - they publish lists of the top schools, and I think they break them down by major, so you can find the best medical school, engineering school, etc.

Once you are enrolled, any decent school will have a placement office that matches students with interviewers, so that they can help their grads find jobs.
