I can start my car up and when I put it in drive or reverse it cuts off. Or I could be sitting at a stop light and have drove my car ten blocks without it cutting off and then suddeleny the engine starts rocking and the car cuts off.

Sounds like you have a big vacuum leak or a leak in the intake manifold. Take it to someone who can help you find it.

O K what year ,make model

older car - could be Idle or carb (choke) needs adjusting- or timing is off -or fuel filter /fuel pump

newer car $$$ could be a number of sensors such as oxygen ,fuel, etc. or again timing or failing fuel pump

either way it is loosing either source of air,fuel or fire in one form or another

one difficulty, did she wash the engine mutually as working? It definitely would have soaked the air filter out. additionally she would have crammed the air intake and not found out it. verify distributor, eliminate the breather can and verify the filter out. If it has a factor type ignition equipment it is going to dry out. Distributerless shouldn't additionally be affected. HEI would bypass and perchance backfire yet gets greater valuable after drying out the cap. My wager is a damp air filter out.

Tune it up then see what happens. That may be all it needs. If it's still doing it after that then take it to a mechanic.

that problem isnt diagnosable by this...you can have at least ten problems...the top of the list of less costly situations would be...bad O2 censors...water or humidty getting into the spark plugs or ignition wiring...or a bad alternator...

when did you tune it last? New plugs ,,wires cap,rotor..then ask again..
