The boy is snowed in all winter. Learns to be self reliant. Not at all sure of the author's name, although I think it started with a K and is 2-3 syllables long. Author also wrote several other juvenile boy's books.

The author is Jim Kjelgaard. He wrote a lot of outdoor adventure/survival stories. If I think of the exact title, I'll modify this post. He hasn't written too much, though, that you can't browse them on amazon reasonably.

I remember that book but cannot remember the name either. I have tried several spellings and come up with nothing. I am going to check the library later! If this question is still posted, I shall get back to you. I remember I read several of his books.
