Not to be smug and so sure of self-sufficiency, because the majority of us are closer than we think to living in a homeless shelter or in a box on the street.
People make a lot of noise about "personal responsibility," as if everyone in "need" was just lazy.
It aint that easy.
Everyday, honest, upstanding people find themselves without a roof and with only the clothes on their back.

Get an education when you are young. I waited until my 30's before I decided to attend college. I think it is important for young people to recognize the value of an education. When people are young, they tend to be very creative in their own way. One should not procrastinate their education or career choice for very long. It becomes more difficult the older you get, and more costly. I realize teens have a lot of things on their mind during adolescence, but getting a good education should be a priority before raising a family or jumping into the workforce. I learned the hard way.

I have this friend. He's a cool guy, but he's blunt and power hungry. He can be very rude and he's bipolar so you know he can be up in your face one minute and not in the other. Im in my mid-teens and us teenagers just want to go out and explore and such. We hung out every week, and we sleptover our houses. I got to the point where I didn' need any friends. I thought he was enough to be my only friend, but he wasn't.
He had thoughts of suicide because he thought nobody loved him but 3-5 people, which isn't true, to get the trust of the people that trusted him, back into his power. But you can see why people might not like him. We always used to get itno fist fights because he wanted it this way, and I wanted it that.
But what I'm trying to say is that...
My lesson was to leave out of bad situations when the going gets rough for you.
People always used to come to me, and as the social butterfly, I'd help them. It gets me into these situations in which, life isn't fun, and I would think of a relief. That relief would be to go to his house.
It was hard because if I had to leave and get him out of my life, I would think no one was there for me. And it was like imagining someone that you loved would be out of your life.
Life is hard and full of sacrifices, so be careful.

Life has taught me that if you want something done, it's always best to do it yourself.
I went through alot of disappointments relying on the wrong people and through that, I've learned that I needed to stand on my own two feet.

Always say I love you. You never know when it will be someones (or your) last day. Also, don't sweat the small stuff and it's all small stuff. Ask anyone who has been through a serious medical crisis, lost a loved one, etc.

Follow your heart and listen to your intuition, it's there for a reason.
Also, don't put off your education - and invest when you are young and it will pay off later.
