That's right, idiotsd who display the confederate flag are doing it to support an independent state of hickland. Just like all those who display swastikas are showing their support for Balinese Hinduism .

'do you want to get shot?' I live in a country where the sale of firearms is restricted : none over here needs one to feel like a big man, or to scare away the nasty black men.
I'd just like to reregister how unconvinced I am by the argument that "the south" is proud of its humiliation and eventual capitulation, all in the name of one of the worst causes in history. (would you find germans decking their cars/houses out in nazi memorabilia an acceptable way
for them to show german pride.
i confront things which i find unacceptable, like some scottish guy switching to a confederate flag avatar, and no one pulling him up over it.

I was born in the North but have spent the last 20 years in the South. What most Northerners don't understand is that for many Southerners, the "Confederate" flag is the one their ancestors fought & died under. A minority of Southerners owned slaves - including some black slave owners. The Southerners fought for their homeland. You can find pictures of some black Confederates, if you look on the net. So the display of the flag can be an exercise of remembrance of heritage.
NOW, that having been said, during the 1960's and 1970's, that same flag became a banner for race-hatred groups, during the civil rights struggle era. And I think we can all agree that race-hatred is to be condemned.
A display of the flag, for either reason, is an exercise of free speech; if it's Constitutional to burn an American flag, why would you want to 'confront' someone for displaying the Confederate flag. It's not illegal. There are probably many more racists that DON"T display a symbol.
I'd say, confront a racist attitude if you find one; leave a display of a flag alone

I answered your question about confronting people who support slavery. Now I am answering this one.
Why confront someone for flying this flag? It does NOT stand for support of slavery, nor is it a symbol of hatred. Some low-minded people took this flag and adopted it as their symbol of these things, but as a whole, it is a symbol of Southern heritage, which does not equal slavery support or racism. Most people who fly this flag are proud of where they came from, proud of their southern lifestyle, and fly it in the same spirit a university student might display a team banner.
Yet, the few bad apples who use the flag for their own ignorant purposes taint the views of society.
I say leave them alone. If they are one of those folks who like pushing buttons and stirring up hate, you won;t change them. If they are just flying the flag with pride for their heritage, still leave them alone. I asume you would confront them because you are offended, but you need to ask yourself if you are assuming what they mean when they fly the flag. If no offense is meant, why make it up?

As this question appeared while "UK & Ireland questions only" was selected, I'll interpret it in that context.
If someone in the UK flew the confederate flag, nine out of ten people wouldn't know what it was. A few more would think that it's got something to do with the USA, and a tiny minority would know the resonance it has in that country.

Yes....it is a flag of a country that was defeated and no longer exists...to fly it, without it beling below the USA flag, is illegal. I don't care if people fought and died under it...more Americans died for the current flag then any ol stupid Confederate flag
Anyway the Confederacy was a nation that when granted peaceful seperation attacked the Union..as such they now and forever SUCK! They were a bunch of idiots who deserved what they got

On Government property, I say yes but if the flag is being displayed on private property, it is called "Freedom Of Speech".
What someone does on their own property should be their own business. Though I am against a symbol such as that, I do believe in the right for anyone to express themselves.

No.
First of all, this is the English/America section of the website... they must just attach together.
Secondly, do you want to get shot? Most people with the confederate flag on their cars also have gun racks.
Thirdly, most people do not display the flag as a means of "hate" or discrimination. They display it as a notion of southern pride.
Fourthly, we all have freedom of speech. What good does it do to confront someone on their freedoms?
Do you confront everyone who displays something you don't agree with?

Who cares if they fly one or not? I mean whats the big deal? Does it effect you in any way, other than maybe your thin skin or you thinking everyone should obey your ideas of PC.
Doesn't bother me one way or the other, I have a life, so little things like this don't bother me.
BTW, go ahead and confront someone displaying one, see what happens.....LOL!
