I think that was the year of Munich Olympics where the Israeli athletes were murdered by palestian terrorists.

In June of that year the Democratic Party Committee was broken into in the Watergate by 18 gentlemen known as the plumbers. That little break in would ultimately cost Nixon his presidency.
