The normal blood pressure used to be 120/80. They changed the guidelines this year and lowered it to 110/70. Your father-in-laws first number is a bit high. Some blood pressure pills have a lot of side effects like swelling of the feet or dificulting urinating, or lack of sex drive depending on the pills he is given. There are hundreds of different ones. I had to try about six before I found one with no side effects. I would definately go on medication if his blood pressure is 140/90. The lower the blood pressure, the longer you live. Its just a matter if you can live with the pills. The Ace inhibitors like Altace and ARBS like Antacand are very tolerable. They protect your kidneys too. At 79, you might just what to just cut out the salt in his diet first and get him on the "dash diet"

No. With the new blood pressure guidelines, 135/72 is too high. He should see his doctor about what can be done to bring it down to < 120/80.

His BP is normal and he doesn't need medicines. Let him be.
