That was the first time I had ever heard of such a thing and was appalled of the concept that was presented on that show.

Anywhere you go...always stay on main streets, don't flash money, use your hotel concierge for travel assistance and recommendations on do's/dont's for your area. You are always at risk of being mugged in any country or city when you do not travel wisely. I have been in many US cities, travelling alone, and never had troubles.

no. most crimes you see on TV dramas are rare. Even TV news and "real police" TV shows give an overexaggeration.

We have one of the highest (if not the highest) ratio of police-to-citizens, to the point where police are enforcing some pretty silly rules. Most cops never need to employ force - let alone draw their guns - on a day's duty, and there are plenty that never need to during their entire careers (even in urban areas).

When I was young, when my family and I were about to make a weekend trip to New York City, I was excited - but also scared that were were going to get mugged! This was the late 70s, when crime was really bad, and even so I never saw any hint of anything remotely related to crime.

Crime is far lower today than it was back in the 80s, although TV keeps everyone's perceptions clouded.

I have never heard of this (I didn't see the show though) I thought you were talking about our pro-sports people who pat each other on the butt in football games. I don't think this happens all over america (either type). We have our share of crime it is worse than some countries and better than most.
