I would say that the Abrahamic religions are responsible for the sense of shame that many people feel about sex.

I think it comes about because of the religious beliefs that sex is sinful. The places where there are different beliefs (I mean aboriginals and African natives) there is not this taboo, as far as I have heard on National geographic type shows. And they run around practically naked all the time, and there doesn't seem to be much sexual abuse. Only in the societies where sex is sinful is this taboo found.

I'm in favor of more sex...
But it goes deeper than just more fun. Sex can lead to babies, and babies can seriously interrupt your life, remember. Ever know a teenager who got pregnant in high school? What's her life like now? Having a baby is like getting grounded for 15 years. It takes tons of time and money to properly raise a kid, and most teenagers don't have the money or maturity to do that well. That means that other things slide, like education. Plus the economic situation of the family can often go south, too.
All of this adds up to the fact that we aren't going to get as much action as we all hope to. Bummer...

I don't think it is bad, but it is very personal. Technique isn't taught in school, and preferences vary greatly, based on exposure to their parents' proclivities (finding magazines, movies, toys in parents' room, etc.), the media, religion, friends, etc.
My wife and I have a good collection of toys and regularly do some light bondage. One friend thinks using toys means you don't know how to use your penis. Another friend doesn't use toys and doesn't understand the fun in bondage, but his wife has toys for her personal use.
I think the taboo behind sex is that people are naturally competitive and they know they can't be the best at everything. That and puritanical prejudice.

It goes back to our Puritanical roots. All of the original colonists were Puritans, and that was their way of thinking. Their beliefs about modesty and morality were built into our laws and customs. And we're still paying the price.

Certain religions demanded that it should be taboo and placed restrictions in the guise of cultured morality.

I would lay the blame squarely er... certain world religions....
Sex was perfectly respectable before mass religion got mixed up in it.
