Has anyone just tried jumping up and down as high as possible for a period of time?

It seems like that would be the best way cuz I know ankle weights are harmful and lifting weights doesn't give you the right speed.

Also doing things like squats with weights is pretty bad for your back.

You need to increase the strength in your leg muscles which requires you to exercise. Just jumping up and down doesn't really help as much because you are only using your body's weight, and if you aren't out of shape, you can't progress much further. Ankle weights aren't harmful if used progressively. The same with lifting weights and squats. It takes time, and your exercise routine has to be balanced (run and/or jog as well as practice jumping. By increasing the weight on your body with ankle weights or weight training, you are training your legs to work with that capacity: in other words, if you weigh 150 lbs and jump 5 feet in the air, and gradually train your body on weights that increase your total to 200 lbs and can eventually jump that same 5 feet, without the weight you will find yourself jumping higher). However, don't just put 50 lbs on! You have to start with something small, but with significant stress on the body: comfortable, but preventing you from jumping the full 5 feet, or to run full out. Hope that helps.

Dale Brown, basketball coach at LSU, developed a pair of shoes designed just for that purpose.
It has 2-3 inch extensions on the ball of the foot area intended to force the athletic to keep off the heels. This strengthens the gastrocnemius muscle and soleus muscles of the lower leg,
These were proven to work, to increase vertical leap.
The basketball players were to wear them everywhere.
I can't find them on the net.
But, if you focused your exercises to strengthen and quicken these muscles, you would improve more than just ankle weights.
