There is such a thing as an acoustic bass, but you probably have an electric. So yeah, you pretty much need an amp to hear it well. Until you get one go sit in the bathroom with the door shut and play so you get better sound out of it.
Guitar... I'm old school so I'd say for an electric - Fender Stratocaster
for an acoustic - 0018 Martin if ya have the $$ or next go with an Epiphone. The sweetest guitar I ever had was an old (Kalamazoo) Epiphone.

The answer is yes. If it's an electric bass, you need an amplifier.
There are really good amps made for bass guitars only. You can go to any guitar store or website and find some well known brands.
If you go to guitar center, they have peavey bass amps that run less than $100.00. They are very strong and very reliable.

Non-accoustic basses should definitely have an amp for superior performance. And guitars do best on Marshall amps.

i dont really know any brands but u dont need an amp for it to MAKE noise but you can barely hear it so if i were you i would get an amp so you can hear it good and also so it makes a nice sound.

if you are playing acustic bass you dont needan amp.. if you re playiing an electric yes....
the best brand for guitars... Gibson!

UMM IT ALL DEPENDS WHAT KIND OF BASS WERE TALKING
LIKE AND ACOUSTIC BASS WONT MEED AND AMP BECAUSE ITLL AMPLIFY ITSELF
BUT ELECTRIC BASSES NEED AN AMP BECAUSE THEY JUST THAT LOW
