It amazes me that every time it snows that the supermarkets are packed. I live in the Philadelphia area and whenever it snows, no matter how much, the news always does stories on supermarkets being packed. You mean to tell me that there isn't a can of soup or a few slices of bread in the house? The snow is never that bad that you can't get out the next day or even two days later. Unbelievable.

OK I totally agree with you. People are so dramatic! I live in Brooklyn, NY and just the other day before it snowed, I ws i PathMark getting dinner, not shopping for a months wortho of food like Im never going to see daylight again. The damn store was so packed and everyone's carts were filled to the rim. It was really annoying. I only was on line with chop meat for burgers, fries, buns and soda. I was in the store for 1 hour and change. People need a life. They are beyond dramatic! They act like they are going to starve to death. Ihave never seen Pathmark like that on a regular Monday night!

They do it out of fear of being snowed in and not being able to have everything they want to have. We're not a society that does well on soup or bread unless we also have other choices besides that. We don't like someone saying we can't have something so we want to make sure we have it all on hand.

We want what we want when we want it. Snow storms threaten that mentality.

Also, many people nowadays are not good at planning ahead for emergency situations. Look at how many people are driving in cars in snow storms and are wearing far too little clothing, no boots, etc. in case they get stranded. If we were good at planning ahead for such emergencies, well, those are the people you WON'T find in the grocery stores right before snow storms.

Yes, I think they are a little goofy. I live in South Jersey. In my adult life I can only recall two "States of Emergency" when they closed the roads for non-essential traffic. Both times were for one day only.

If you genuinely were concerned about survival, wouldn't it be easier to have a box on hand with some powdered eggs, powdered milk and maybe some bread mixes? We have camping equipment, so power outages wouldn't impair a meal or hot bathing water for us.

Heaven knows we have a ton of canned goods and stuff in the freezer. I bet we could go for weeks, and we have five in the family.

I will admit I top off my gas tank though. The plant I work at rarely closes, and I might have to idle a lot or proceed slowly to and from work.

LOL I always wonder what is going through peoples minds every time they hear there is going to be a storm. I work in a supermarket and they started stampeding to the store two days before the storm hit.

They're just silly. And you're right: who's ever been snowed in for weeks (unless you got 11 feet of snow, like in upstate NY)?

Most people drive SUV's and look for a reason to go out in bad weather. But they can otherwise very easily survive, as long as they don't mind eating family members . . .

You think that's nuts, try these folks down here in Florida with a hurricane announcement. Okay I can see baby formula, bread and canned goods but ice cream, milk, and other perishables? Not like we can stick in the snow bank to keep it cold. People are just plain weird.

People usually stock up right before snow in case they end being snowed in; they feel it's necessary to stock up for when their current supply of food runs out.

Funny question! people just kick into survival mode. Think about it. If the snow sticks you might get stuck indoors, with no supplies or just might not be in the mood to go out to get groceries so you stock up with the basics while you can, in case ya can't. Get it. :-)

That sort of notion goes back to our ancestors' preparations for winter and laying in a supply of food in case moving from one place to another was difficult or even impossible. Starvation and the fear of it were to be prevented in order to stay alive.
