We actually aren't born to work that hard. Hard work is completely created by human beings and society. Natives living in lush jungle work a few hours a day. People living in communes in the US work very efficiently and also don't work a lot. Some parts of the world enjoy 30 hour work weeks and 4 week vacations.
Hard work is not any more necessary than paying income tax*. Actually, a lot of our hard work might be the result of the corrupt world banking system and the "necessity" of paying off the federal reserve's interest (national debt) with income tax. If you received 20% more income (because you didn't pay income tax) and inflation didn't happen, life would be a lot easier for you, wouldn't it? You wouldn't have to work nearly that hard.
*(This is another story: Graduated Income tax is illegal.)

The Puritans in the US had the idea that life was basically about work. They would not sit down until they fell into exhaustion at night (probably at 7 pm in the winter.) Of course most people did not take religion so seriously so they had hard but somewhat balanced lives.
The Puritans did not party much. Now, beatniks, hippies, crazies of many types, all react against this type of over-serious life style. Why kill yourself working ridiculous hours if you have no time or energy to enjoy life?
Now you don't have to be a hedonist. There is a happy medium as they say since frat boys who play all the time may go fairly far in life with their connections but if they never produce anything useful, at the end of their lives, they may look back and feel disgusted since they have wasted most of their time in frivolous living.
I would rather be too serious than too foolish and wimpy.
I must add that that last comment is not aimed at anyone in particular -- just my opinion but I am an over-achiever and perfectiont workaholic so you should weigh that into the equation.

I suppose it is a matter of what you want to have in your life to make your life comfortable. Some people need trips , brand new toys and large houses, others are fine with the stuff the just gets them by. It really dictates how hard you need to work to achieve these things. I think it is fair to say though lots of us want more then what we have at the present moment though, myself included. Government keeps us working hard too, to keep the cash flow in their pockets so they can keep their big car, houses and trips , so along as they have these needs us people we keep breaking our backs to keep them going. I am sure they will make sure of it, just look at the retirement age going up and the amount of money our seniors are given to retire on.

Well, blame our past generations. Society create a rule that doesn't fit in our need to be ourselves, to be free.
My mom worked all her life in a bank. She never did anything that she liked because she need the money and her retirement. Now she is retired and sick because of the stress of her hard work.
My first advice is if you are not happy with your work ..., quite right now! Second... do something you enjoy. We all gone die anyway. Why don't achieve great things, great experiences when you still alive?

No. Purpose is a thing made up by people.
All of their purposes amount in reality to nothing.
Like it or not, this was the world you were born into. You will have to work very hard to change even a small part of it.

I answer from a religious perspective. You don't have to take the stories in the Bible literally, but I believe there are clues that point to principles.
The first principle from the story of Eden is that mankind appeared on the scene from divine origins, and that he was to live in harmony, acceptance and faith with his creator, the spiritual source and motivation in of lives. However, man was told that if he chose to reach to become a god himself, symbolized by the tree of knowledge, then he would die. In other words, separate himself from the only life source, God. Now, instead of enjoying a life of grace supported by God, the fallen man must work to sustain himself. Man fell from a joyous spiritual state to a material existence.
Having done this out of pride, man changed and lost his rather nice life, and kicked the world as we know it in motion. It's a world created by a fallen man, so it's fraught with all kinds of nasty inharmonious things, through which we are born and must pass.
I see it as a giant classroom for anyone that comes into existence by the fallen man. The original man knew the true and good life, but we do not. So our experiences teach us to grow and to come back to genuine goodness buy seeing darkness and evil first. We come to know good by seeing what is not good. It's an upward, adventurous perilous journey for a good purpose. Kind of like the great migration of salmon upstream, or the great journey of the monarch butterfly.
I think that whether we are on the true journey or not, we are all serving a higher unseen purpose. There are clues in ancient writings. They key is to find that center of life within and flow with it.
Man as we and know him today is far removed from his original state, which is far better. In the original state man is superior to the natural order and is subject only to God. In our fallen state, we struggle to survive the natural and material order that we became subject to. Think about it, if we didn't struggle so much to survive through work we would descend into decay. For now, no choice but to struggle to survive.

Well, I woulldn't say the purpose of life is to work. The purpose of work is to pay for life. Anything more is pursuing materialism. Then that's you're own fault.
Simplify your life, have what you need. You can waste your life chasing stuff that'll eventually become boring to you.
This is the only life you have, do not waste a minuite of it.

we were no placed here to work ourselves to death...it was a curse placed on us when Adam disobeyed God. Adam was placed in paradise originally where he never had to work for anything...everything he needed was there for him...
nevertheless the curse has been removed but we have to believe that and there are many ways out there to achieve financial freedom...

We are not born to work. We are economic slaves to evil men. Why, I don't know.
My advice is, acknowledge this truth and stop fighting it - free your mind to accomplish your own goals, so that the sham and drudgery become trivial to you.
