It's just lack of understanding. People need to learn. And I think society, as a whole, is gaining more knowledge about it.
But you are right. People in general treat mentally ill people as though they were mentally handicapped.

First of all people are ignorant, they don't understand because they don't have a family member w/this problem or if they do, they blame it on the parents, without even ever getting the help for the child before they go into adult hood. I know people with problems like so, are very good people, and it is so hard for you to be able to express yourself because people don't want to hear it and already think they know you are a lost case. Not true, I wouldn't say you are mentally ill, just have some areas in your life whom need mental health help to get you ready for the real world. As if this world isn't full of nutty people, to survive I believe we all have some a mental issues that get in the way. You know you have a problem and your are getting the help. If everyone was normal there would not be any anger management classes, drug rehab classes, jail, etc. You are far from the real loonies in this world, I know it is a cruel world, just hang in there, to learn to live and learn to survive in this dysfunctional world...

Some mentally ill people are mentally retarded but others have some problem but are really smart. Like in this movie a mentally ill guy knew stuff with math like when the tooth picks dropped he knew how many where on the ground. And he kept winning at a casino because he knew whether to bet or not to bet because he could figure out what card it was. But they do not have common sence.

Society tends to look on outward appearances. When my daughter was very young, there was a child in her classroom had some problems and other children called her names and didn't play with her. My child came home and we talked about this. I asked my daughter, would you like to be treated like this young girl is being treated, and her reply was no. So, the next day she took a stand and started playing with the girl and told the others What we had talked about. This caused the other children to start playing with the young girl.
I'm not handicapped, but, I believe everyone deserves a chance at anything they fell they can do or accomplish.

at the same time as people imagine of someone believing that the CIA is following them, it sounds humorous. at the same time as they see a homeless guy walking down the line talking to himself, it appears that evidently humorous. yet they don't end to imagine that interior there's a authentic individual with emotions. that is a persons'' son or daughter, a persons'' dad or mom or aunt or cousin. that is a few thing that is humorous till it occurs to you or someone you want. about the in trouble-free terms time psychological ailment is portrayed in a favorable gentle in the media is at the same time as the guy overcomes it, yet there continually must be a scene of them backsliding and going thoroughly bonkers in public. the in trouble-free terms different ideas look a psychopathic killer (which isn't a psychological ailment) or the butt of a comic book's jokes.

if mentally ill, how can your IQ be higher??? I amn not saying treat you all like babies because everyone can grow and learn. but as far as really being smarter ....well, i'd just say you all need a bit more attention to learn. but maybe you all are more aware, i wouldn't doubt that.

Because most people don't distinguish between the different types of mental illness. If you're mentally ill, you must be some kind of idiot. Show them they are wrong.

I think alot of it has to do with a lack of education on the part of the general public. People are sometimes ignorant, and act off of stereotypes towards people with disabilities.
