There are actually several categories that people use everyday and don't even realize it. Most programs are either in one or the other. The first one is called shareware where you actually buy different program and renew. The other is free ware where you can get programs for free without even paying a dime. I often see many programs like operating systems, anti-virus, and other programs both fall underneath both of these categories. Each program is different though because each company has different policy on services and programs. Many people do create programs that are useful for newbies and professionals. Heck, companies may even offer a another version for free. The site that I highly recommend to download.com, which has both shareware and free ware. Read the reviews from the editors and users who tried the programs.

Software is often divided into two categories:
1. Systems software : Includes the operating system and all the utilities that enable the computer to function.
2. Applications software : Includes programs that do real work for users. For example, word processors, spreadsheets, and database management systems fall under the category of applications software.

Hmm... not quite sure which two categories are you talking about, but the common two categories that software can be classified into are:

System Software and Application Software

The system software refers to the programs that are meant to support the system itself, for example Operating Systems, Device Drivers, etc.

The application software refers to the programs/softwares you develop to implement some real life requirement, example payroll system, a website, a pc game, an inventory management system, etc.

Er, do you mean operating systems and applications? I'm not sure what is meant by two categories. It all depends how you categorize them.

If you do mean operating systems and applications. The OS is what actually makes the computer run. The applications are everything else, in very simple terms.

Your research for coursework should be done by you, and not asking others to do the work for you.
