I may be moving to there area from Bournemouth on south coast but want to make sure we live in a nice area with no riff raff, or groups of chavs hanging about etc. Any suggestion on a nice area?

I lived near Bournemouth and in Leeds. I can only talk about my experiences. The people are very friendly but there is a problem with crime and you regularly see anti-social behaviour.

First there are no Chavs in Leeds, they are called Scallies. There are more of them and they are much worse too. There are some high crime areas particularly closer to the centre of the city. When I lived in Burley and in Hide Park, both times my house was burgled. It was a regular occurrence, you knew it would happen at some point. The next street along was in the News of the World as "The street with most crime 2005". The police didn't really care to stop it.

The further out of the city you go, the better and safer the area. I used to live in Adel (to avoid the crime as much as I could), I never had any problems there. Roundhay was also nice. However, it gets more expensive. If you want a good balance between price, convenience to the city and pubs, Headingley is the student centre and a good place to start off.

If you want a safe area, you have to pay for it and it is probably not inside the city limits.

Some of its lovely but there are alot of rough areas. York is nice, about a 25 min drive from Leeds. Or go for anywhere out in the Dales.

Try Birkenshaw it's about 7 mile's from Leeds 5 from Bradford, easy access to the m62 and the m1, it's got good schools and a country park nearby, you can be in the Yorkshire dales in less than an hour.

Wakefield area is ok and not far from Leeds good commuting distance. Or Outwood/Wrenthorpe areas of Wakefield and again good commuting distance. Only about 20 mins on train and even less by car depending on traffic.

Depends on your budget. Rawdon and Yeadon are nice.
Adel, Lawnswood, Pool are nice but a bit more expensive.
Bit further out you've got Ilkley, Harrogate (expensive)
