I have a 96 Oldsmobile Achieva that just started overheating this week :( I turned the notch to "vent" the temp all the way up to hot and on full blast and that makes the gage go down to normal. My car says to use Dex-Cool but I know it causes a lot of problems. Does it really matter if I use regular anti freeze over Dex-Cool? I put regular antifreeze in may car once about 4 or 5 years ago and it didn't seem to hurt anything...

Bandit is right. You can use either kind, but stick to one or the other, don't mix. After contaminating with regular, you must do some fancy acid flushes before Dex-Cool is put back in.

I've read a lot about this Dex-Cool, including attending some dealer classes for new car owners. The stuff works great - IF - you maintain it! Don't just look at the level in the overflow, you must also inspect be removing the radiator cap. Your system must not have hardly any air in it. Otherwise it starts gunking up and clogs up your system. This is what drives your temp up and down.

Regular green anti-freeze isn't as fussy about some air.

Properly maintained and using 50/50 Dex-Cool and distilled water will give your vehicle max cooling system life, as all parts were designed for this material. Changing to green isn't the end of the world, but will likely not have the parts last as long.

To cure your overheat problem you will need to acid flush. Try the Prestone 10 minute flush first. If that doesn't cut-it try their 6 hour flush.

flush it out several times til you get clear clean water.then use green antifreeze.the red dex cool was a bad idea from the beginning.it has nothing to with it being a gm car.just any good brand green and youll be fine.you do not have a blown head gasket.if you did it would be foamy.

1) make sure the levels are correct with 50/50 mix, green with green or orange with orange.
2)it doesn't really matter which , but the dex-cool is good enough for the manufacturer, but it's up to you.
3) you may have a thermostat going out.

Prestone Now offers a universal formula made for all types of cooling systems. I have many customers who do not like using the dexcool for their GM/Chevy vehicles. I called Prestone and asked questions myself for feed back purposes to my customers. I found that you can use the Yellow Universal one on any system including your Buick. It says right on the bottle Safe to use with all colors of antifreeze.

cooling system needs that dex-cool in it.not a good ideal to put normal anti-freeze in system, unless you flushed the old dex-cool totaly out .
