It is a tough issue. I can answer you briefly as follows:
1) The Middle East is the cradle of the ancient civilization because of its good location, and good weather.
2) Because of their rich sources of Oil and other minerals. The gulf area is one of the richest places in the world of oil and less population.
3) The major current religions in the Middle East are:
Islam: =~ 82% All over the Middle East
Christianity =~ 15% (Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Iraq)
3% Others like Judaism (Palestine, Yemen, Morocco)
Coptic religion (Egypt) and other minorities.
4) The Middle East is bounded by many cultural societies like Roman in the north, Indian in the east, African in the south and west. You have to study Anthropology to have more information about that vast issue.
