You know that term "effaced" that the doctors use? Well, when they say you are "softening" it is the same thing. During your pregnancy, your cervix thickens so it will be strong to maintain the pregnancy. When your body decides it's time (or when they induce a woman's labor) the cervix starts to thin out to make a passage way for your baby. Congratulations and good luck!!!!!

It can happen that fast and it can take a lot longer too. Your cervix is really hard for most of your pregnancy and it is softening so it can stretch. You are starting to dilate but sometimes women take a week or two to get from 0-5 and then start labor in earnest. Your body is starting the labor process but you are in the earliest stages. If your amniotic sac is in tact then having lots of sex (tell dad that there are points for an orgasm in you) can help kick start labor. The hormones in dad's semen can help the cervix ripen faster (not as necessary now) and the oxytocin released when you have an orgasm can help strengthen contractions (you may be having really tiny ones without knowing it). Walking can help but make sure that you rest up for the coming labor. Eating light meals and drinking lots of water can help too. You are in the home stretch, but this may well be the longest two weeks of your life (you could e going to the hospital tonight though). That baby will come when he/she is ready but it won't be long now.

My best friend was dialated to 1 cm, starting at about 36 or 37 weeks, for about 3 weeks and her cervix was incredibly soft for about the same time. Her water broke exactly 1 day before her due date!

I wasn't dialated, but I was 50% effaced (softened) 3 days before I had my baby. Softening just means that your cervix is becoming softer and thinner so that the baby can pass through it easier

I remember reading that the other day. So it wasn't your water. Well my sister was 4 centemeters dialated for 2 weeks and then went into labour. But also no 2 bodies are the same. You could go into labour any minute os you could go another week. you just never know.

Your cervex has to dialate in order to push out the baby. Softening means your cervex is getting ready for delivery. It can take a long time. So get comfortable and be prepared for something that could take weeks.

well I personally have been dialted to one for 2 weeks (maybe more by now) There is no way to tell exactly when your body will go into labor, your doctor is just estimating based on your cervix being thick or thin. Good luck and enjoy your finally days of sleeping in and jumping in the car with no worries.

softening means the skin inbetween the cervix is starting to thin out and get ready for the baby is be bore. i was 3 cm and 85%thinned for 3 weeks and deliver4ed 1 week late 41 weeks. dont be scraead youll do wonderful. you could have your baby in a week you could start contracting in an hour it just depends on how your body is. nice belly: it is bigger than mine. i wish mine was bigger when i had my son

I think miracle baby? answered this pretty well, I just wanted to add that if you have questions or don't understand the pregnancy "slang" I would ask your doctor right away. (I know sometimes I feel like i might ask too many questions to the doctor) but you need to know and understand what exactly he or she is telling you is going on!!! I wouldn't rely on the people on yahoo answers to tell you. (although this time i think you got a good answer)
