Randomly my car, 2006 Saturn Ion, will not start. When I turn the key, all the accessories turn on but aboslutely no sound from the engine. It doesnt crank (I think thats the term) or anything. My radio, lights, and all other electronics work fine. I found that after approximately 10 minutes, the car will start up fine. I have an aftermarket stereo in my car, that is the only modification. This includes deck, speakers, and amplifiers. Any suggestions on things to check? I plan on taking it to the dealer, but I would like to use that as a last resort. The dealer screwed me over with a previous repair, so I am trying to diagnose the problem myself. Thank you!

-I have never bothered to check if the steering wheel is locked, but I do not think it is. I will check next time.

-I will try putting it in neutral. Dont think I have tried that yet. Thanks

-As far as all those other possibilites, those are something I am not able to check myself so I may be stuck with going to the dealer. Do you think it could be related to my strereo? Because then it may not be covered under warrenty since I added an aftermarket stereo.

Thanks everyone so far!

-Oh I forgot to mention. As far as a lose wire, I could see that being a problem. I have a very powerful subwoofer setup in the trunk that rattles everything in my car. Maybe I have rattled a wire lose someplace? Is it something I can check?

When the car does not start, try running a jumper wire directly from the battery to the solenoid wire of the starter - if it turns the engine over, then the problem is in your ignition switch (the start position only). For that you will need to have the ignition switch changed out (this is relatively inexpensive). If the jumper yields no help, I would suspect the solenoid on the starter (replace the starter). I had a Toyota like this years ago, and I got gray hair over it before I finally pinpointed the ignition switch. Good luck with yours.

Could be a " heat soak" condition....when the engine is hot, the engine heat and/or exhaust manifold heat causes the starter armature to expand internally and bind up against the coil . This locks up the starter until it cools down and will be able to spin again. Make sure there is a metal heat shield for the starter and you may have to wrap the starter in "header wrap tape" which is a temp resistant material that can be found at parts stores or high performance shops. High-perf stores also carry mini-starters that are smaller than original yet just as strong and aren't as prone to the problem because they have more of a gap between the components although they are a little pricey. Could also be that your igniton key is not making correct contact inside the ignition cylinder which caauses the computer by default to prevent the car from being started for an hour....would have to be checked by a dealer or some shop with a VATS tester. Hard to say, for sure. The car should be under warranty, so it shouldn't cost you anything for the repair. It could be many things, like a bad solenoid, bad ignition switch, loose wire, and WHO knows what else. Time for the dealer.

make sure the new stereo if off before you try to start it, it sounds like a bad connection from the battery, or starter relay.
