I had an 827sli it was ex flying squad (police).Fully loaded and leather plus it was police tuned. If you get a good one they are great value for money the later the reg the better. The V6 is a stronger engine than the 2lt and the turbo ones are always thrashed. The V6 suffers from tapping at low revs this can be fixed by fitting a small oil filter which seems to up the oil pressure.
I found that Halfords always had the parts to fix/service mine so spares wont be a problem.
In my opinion they can be good cars.
There is a company in west London called Motobuild they chipped and tuned mine further to 260bhp which made it quite rapid.
Rover does have a bad reputation and most people will tell you to stay away from them. However lots of car for not a lot of money and for the price that they now go for you could do a lot worse.

Just about the worst idea a guy could have
Remember Rover you know the ones that went broke. The 800 could have been the sole reason

Owned one for 5yrs. not the best handling cars but comfortable on long journeys. Check all the electrics work especially the heater & electric windows! Gearboxes can get noisy too.Fair performance & fuel consumption on the 2ltr. Mine's never let me down & it's a lot of car for little money. Think of it as a poor mans jaguar. There are better big cars out there, but if you can find a good one try it!

The idea is OK if you buy cheaply and run it till it breaks, don't spend a fortune on it when it does. If you do a comparatively low mileage it may a very cheap form of motoring.I know someone who has a 9 year old car and its been fine.

My boyfriend has a 2.0 Litre Impreza and many times receives about 40 miles to £10 of petrol..my mum has a 2.0 Cavalier and receives about 50-60 miles to £10..My dad has a diesel frontera and there isnt a lot distinction in fee because the diesel is more desirable expensive to the more desirable miles he does nevertheless fee him. With the petrol expenses now...2.0 litres aint too sturdy! x

I would stay well clear of all Rovers.
I work as a taxi controller and know that Rovers always break down.

My sister had one for years, it was brilliant.
Other Rover models seem rubbish, but that one somehow was a great car.

Why ??
When there are so many other nice cars to choose from.
Unless it really is cheap because when the time comes to sell you will not get much for it and I mean cheap.
