The education institutions from K-12 to college are what we call establishments in terms of teaching philosophy, testing/passing, contents, teacher qualification, etc. Because the government gives a lot of money to these institutions, it can be argued by some that educators control the education process. Colleges that are "accredited" recognize each other in terms of credits and degrees awarded.

Some students don't fit in the established environment and don't do well. E-learning is an alternative. You find other comments here.

I have friends who teach for a well known online college. First, the school is more relaxed about who they hire. Second, the pay is not much so there is much pressure on the teacher to do things at low budget, which you wouldn't find in mainstream colleges. The other issue is that degrees from online colleges may not be accredited and therefore not recognized by mainstream colleges if you wish to pursue advanced degrees with the mainstream schools. So you probably learn the skills but the degree is not as marketable.
