I'm looking for an area close to Montreal for great skiing but a short drive from Montreal (and please don't suggest Bruno, be serious).

1) Mont-Tremblant is one of the best places to ski in Quebec and the Village is nice. It's about 1:30hours from Montreal.
2) Mount St-Anne is also a nice, big mountain. It also usually has more snow the Mont-Tremblant, but it's further away. About 3hours from Montreal.
3) Bromont is the closest to Montreal after St-Bruno. It's also a good place to go skiing and they have night skiing. It's a little less then 1hour from Montreal.
4) Sutton is known for it's glade trails. It's a little more then 1hour from Montreal.
5) I've heard Owl's Head also has good glade trails now. About 1h40hours from Montreal.
6) Orford is about 1h30hours from Montreal.

What is wrong with Bruno?

If what you are saying is that you need a vertical drop of 500 metres (1500 feet) or more than you will have to travel to Tremblant or to Jay Peak in VT or to Whiteface in NY. Nothing closer by to Montréal.
